WANDERLEI CONFIRMS AKIYAMA BOUT IN AUSTRALIA

Postby Dracco on Sat Oct 17, 2009 9:10 pm

Wanderlei Silva, in a video posted to his official YouTube channel on Thursday night, confirmed his next fight would be at the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s debut in Australia.

He will face Yoshihiro Akiyama at UFC 110 when the promotion lands at the Acer Arena in Sydney. Akiyama first mentioned the bout at a recent press conference in Japan touting the UFC’s new “Undisputed” video game.

“I am so happy because it is the first event there,” said Silva with a huge smile across his face. “This is a great honor for me because I fight in the main event in Cologne, Germany, in the first event there, and I’m gonna fight in the first event in Australia.”

Silva (32-10-1) hasn’t fought since Germany in June, where he lost a unanimous decision in a 195-pound catchweight to Rich Franklin. Accruing a 1-3 record since joining the ranks of the UFC, the bout with Akiyama will be Silva’s first at 185 pounds, a move that will put him on a more level playing field with his opposition.

Considered one of the Top 10 fighters in the middleweight division, Akiyama (13-1; 2 no contests) will be making his second appearance for the UFC. He debuted in the Octagon at UFC 100 with a split decision win over Alan Belcher.

Q opinas de esto wey?? chale no quiero ver este UFC ....si madrean a Wand y Mirko adios a los dos del UFC

It appears that the question of whether or not Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic would retire following his dismantling at the hands of a much younger Junior dos Santos at UFC 103.

MMAWeekly.com late Wednesday night learned from sources close to the bout that Filipovic will likely return to the Octagon at UFC 110 in Sydney, Australia, to face Ben Rothwell. The bout has not yet been signed.

At 35 years of age, Filipovic (25-7-2) was manhandled in his UFC return in Dallas, where he verbally submitted under a barrage of punches from dos Santos in the third round. He contemplated his career following that bout, questioning whether or not he could get over a “mental block” when fighting in a cage. The greatest successes of his career coming in the Pride ring in Japan.

Rothwell (30-7) made his Octagon debut at UFC 104 just a few short weeks ago, but it left a bitter taste in his mouth. He lost a second round TKO stoppage at the hands of Cain Velasquez. He was taking shots to the face from Velasquez while on his knee. Rothwell, who was rising to his feet at the time of the stoppage, says he was unhurt and believes that fight was halted too soon.

Both fighters will get the chance to redeem themselves when the Ultimate Fighting Championship makes its Australian debut on Feb. 21. Wanderlei Silva and Yoshihiro Akiyama are also expected to grace the fight card in a middleweight bout.
